Gwangju and Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Members Head to the National Assembly
The Democratic Party of Korea has issued a general mobilization order to local council members in relation to the declaration of martial law.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeonnam Provincial Councils on the 4th, the Democratic Party's central committee delivered a message this morning calling all local council members affiliated with the party nationwide to convene at the National Assembly.
Democratic Party members of the Gwangju City Council attended an emergency joint meeting held at Gwangju City Hall after the declaration of martial law early that morning. Tension briefly arose as the martial law prohibited all political parties and local council activities. The city council postponed the review of next year's budget proposals by each standing committee, which had been scheduled to start at 10 a.m. that day.
Democratic Party members of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, except for the budget committee members, are all heading to the National Assembly.
Meanwhile, Democratic Party members of the basic councils in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions are also expected to gather at the National Assembly following the central party's directive.
