"Not Impeachment but Harsher Punishment" Urged
Cheon Ha-ram, floor leader of the Reform New Party, harshly criticized President Yoon Seok-yeol, who declared martial law, using terms such as "incapacitated person" and "anti-state figure," and argued that he should face punishment more severe than impeachment.
On the same day, Floor Leader Cheon wrote on his Facebook, "Not only should the incapacitated Yoon Seok-yeol be impeached and removed, but he must also be strongly punished," adding, "Yoon Seok-yeol is an anti-state figure."
He stated, "The presidential office, which failed to stop the mad president, is an anti-state force," and added, "One mad person is destroying the best democracy in Asia, the Republic of Korea. Even now, the exchange rate is soaring."
He continued, "The economic damage and the harm to the people are beyond imagination," and said, "The Reform New Party and I will promptly lift the martial law with the authority granted to the National Assembly by the great people of the Republic of Korea." In fact, the National Assembly passed a resolution early that day demanding the lifting of the martial law declared by President Yoon. He reiterated, "We will hold Yoon Seok-yeol strictly accountable for the destruction of democracy and the economy in the Republic of Korea."
At a press conference held at the Rotunda Hall of the National Assembly in Yeouido, Floor Leader Cheon also criticized President Yoon by calling him "mad." He said, "The Reform New Party's position was to carefully approach and prevent the unfortunate event of impeachment from recurring," but added, "Considering today's situation, even stronger punishment than impeachment is not enough."
He said, "The People Power Party was once the party I belonged to," and added, "I do not wish for a party with a long history in the Republic of Korea to become an accomplice to treason. I sincerely appeal to my fellow lawmakers. Even now, immediately expel Yoon Seok-yeol from the party," demanding action.
