The Key to Lifting Martial Law Is Securing a Majority of Total National Assembly Members... Military Attempts to Enter Headquarters

After President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law, the military is attempting to enter the National Assembly main building. Speaker Woo Won-shik urged all members of the National Assembly to gather.

On the 3rd, with President Yoon declaring martial law, the key issue is whether the National Assembly can demand the lifting of martial law. Article 77, Paragraph 5 of the Constitution states that when the National Assembly requests the lifting of martial law with the approval of the majority of the total members, the president must lift it.

For now, both the Democratic Party of Korea and Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, plan to demand the lifting of martial law.

The problem is whether a plenary session can be held. Currently, to hold a plenary session and lift martial law, a majority of the total members, that is, 150 members, must gather. It is known that a considerable number of members, including Speaker Woo, are inside the plenary hall.

Speaker Woo said, "Military and police personnel should not be shaken and must hold their positions." Leader Han also stated via social media (SNS) that "Military and police must never cooperate with or aid unconstitutional martial law."

As of the 4th, military airborne units are attempting to enter the National Assembly main building and are confronting opposition party aides.
