Residents Report Symptoms Including Smoke Inhalation, Headache, Breathing Difficulties, and Eye Pain
On the 2nd, a fire caused by a butane gas explosion broke out in an apartment in Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu, Daegu, resulting in 30 residents evacuating on their own or being rescued.
According to the Daegu Fire and Safety Headquarters, the fire occurred at around 8:59 a.m. on the 15th floor of an apartment in Hwanggeum-dong, Suseong-gu. Twenty-one residents evacuated on their own, and nine residents inside the apartment were safely rescued by the fire authorities.
As the flames intensified, the fire authorities temporarily issued a Level 1 response and dispatched 57 fire trucks and 134 firefighters to the scene to extinguish the fire. The fire was initially brought under control by the fire authorities at around 10:05 a.m.
All residents evacuated safely, and no casualties occurred. However, some residents reported symptoms such as smoke inhalation, headaches, difficulty breathing, and eye pain.
The fire occurred in a household on the 15th floor where a guardian and children lived. It was investigated that the fire started when butane gas exploded while boiling beef bone soup with a gas burner on the veranda.
The apartment building has a total of 28 floors, and it was confirmed that about 10 floors above the affected unit suffered soot damage due to smoke. Suseong-gu, Daegu, plans to assess the status of the affected households and consider support measures such as accommodation and cleaning.
