Earlier, the international design competition, which began accepting entries in August, attracted participants from 11 countries, 105 companies, and 74 teams. On the 13th of last month, 8 teams submitted their final proposals, and the city explained that the winning design was selected through two rounds of evaluation.
The winning design, titled "ONE ROOF : ONE CITY," was jointly submitted by Haean Comprehensive Architecture Office and KG Engineering Comprehensive Architecture Office. The design symbolizes Pyeongtaek’s past, present, and future through a massive single roof shaped like a leaf, reflecting the horizontality of the Pyeongtaek plains. In particular, it embodies the city’s vision for harmonious development by placing horizontal structures among the vertical high-rise buildings of the new city.
The new city hall, which will house both the city hall and city council, will be constructed on Work Site 6 in the center of the Godeok Internationalization Planning District. The site area is 83,521㎡, and the city plans to build a new city hall with one basement floor and five above-ground floors, totaling 51,403㎡ in gross floor area. The project will involve an investment of 346.2 billion KRW. The city intends to start the design within this year and begin construction in the second half of next year. The target completion date is the second half of 2027.
However, even after building the new city hall, the city plans to continue using the existing city hall as a secondary office to promote balanced regional development.
Mayor Jeong said, "The new city hall will be more than just an administrative workspace; it will be a place open to citizens for communication and exchange, symbolizing the balanced development and integration of Pyeongtaek."
The current Pyeongtaek City Hall building was constructed in 1993. After the integration of three cities and counties?Pyeongtaek City, Pyeongtaek County, and Songtan City?in 1995, an annex building was added, and it has been used as the city hall ever since.
