The first anniversary memorial service for the late Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol, who died in the line of duty at a fire scene last year, was held on the 1st at the National Jeju Memorial Cemetery.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Fire Safety Headquarters commemorated the noble spirit of sacrifice of Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol, who devoted himself to protecting the lives and property of the people.
Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol died at the age of 29 due to a structural collapse during firefighting operations after safely evacuating an elderly couple at a warehouse fire in Pyoseon-myeon, Seogwipo City last year.
About 150 people attended the memorial service, including the bereaved family, Governor Oh Young-hoon, Fire Safety Headquarters Director Go Min-ja, and fellow firefighters.
Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol was a proud firefighter and our colleague who fulfilled his responsibilities without a moment’s hesitation at disaster scenes. Although he has now gone to a distant place from which he cannot return, his noble dedication will live forever in the hearts of all of us.”
Mr. Im Young-jun, the father of Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol, said, “It has already been a year since I parted with my son. He left behind farewell and longing, but now we try to keep those as precious memories. As I promised my son to live a new life, our family will live diligently.”
Notably, the late captain’s older brother, Im Ji-hyeok, passed the 2024 firefighter recruitment exam and is currently undergoing training as a new firefighter, drawing attention.
The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters presented a portrait of Fire Captain Im Seong-cheol, created with the heartfelt feelings of the staff, to the bereaved family on this day. After the memorial service, they paid respects at the gravesites of three firefighters who died in the line of duty, buried at the National Jeju Memorial Cemetery, honoring their noble sacrifices.
