Family's Saved Assets and Company Copper Theft
Admits Crime Unable to Explain Source of Sponsorship Funds
A story has emerged about a Chinese man who stole a large sum of money to donate because he wanted to be called "oppa" by a female streamer.
On the 29th, Hong Kong's South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on a man identified as A from Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in southeastern China, who became obsessed with online live streaming. A donated a total of 4 million yuan (approximately 770 million KRW) to a particular female streamer. To afford this, he survived on steamed buns and began dipping into his family's savings, causing conflicts with them. However, he did not stop there and eventually committed crimes to gather funds.
A, who worked in hardware trading, stole some copper from May until last month and sold it for cash at a scrap recycling center. Meanwhile, the trading company's factory noticed a significant amount of copper missing and reported it. At first, A confessed only to two recent thefts but firmly denied additional crimes. However, unable to properly explain the source of the funds used for live streaming donations, he eventually confessed to all offenses.
Since May, he committed over 40 thefts, accumulating about 2.3 million yuan (approximately 443 million KRW). He stated that all the money was used to support the streamer to raise her ranking. Regarding his motive, A said, "It was not to meet the woman, but simply because I wanted to hear her call me 'oppa'." He was arrested on theft charges, and more than 1 million yuan (approximately 190 million KRW) has been recovered and returned to the factory so far.
Local netizens who heard this story reacted with disbelief, saying things like, "He spent 4 million yuan just to hear the word 'oppa.' He should see a psychiatrist," and "If he wanted to hear that, why not just record it and play it repeatedly?"
