Mayor Lee: "A Valuable Victory Earned Through Players' Sweat and Fans' Passionate Support"

Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang stated on the 30th of last month that Pohang Steelers lifting the championship trophy after a fierce battle extending into overtime in the final of the ‘2024 Hana Bank Korea Cup’ held at Seoul World Cup Stadium would be a great source of strength for the citizens and businesses of Pohang.

With this victory, Pohang Steelers secured their second consecutive championship in the tournament, setting a remarkable record of their sixth overall Korea Cup win, becoming the sole leader with the most championships.

Despite the match being held in Seoul, a large cheering squad of about 14,000 people, including Mayor Lee Kang-deok, Pohang City Council Chairman Kim Il-man, Pohang citizens, and expatriates, gathered to support the intense East Coast Derby between Pohang and Ulsan, showcasing grand performances and passionate cheering.

After conceding the opening goal, Pohang did not give up and equalized in the second half. In a tense match, Kim In-sung scored the winning goal in the 7th minute of the second half of overtime, followed by Kang Hyun-je’s shot in added time of the second half of overtime, sealing a 3-1 victory.

Immediately after the match, Mayor Lee Kang-deok celebrated the victory with the fans and congratulated the coach and players for their comeback win, continuing to express gratitude and encouragement for raising Pohang’s prestige with this valuable victory.
