China will extend the exemption period for additional tariffs on certain U.S. imports until the end of February next year.
On the 29th, the Tariff Commission of the State Council of China announced that the deadline for excluding additional tariffs on more than 100 U.S. imported products, including rare earths, medicinal disinfectants, and nickel-cadmium batteries, will be extended until February 28 next year.
Spain's EFE news agency noted that this extension is shorter by 2 months and 27 days compared to the 6 months and 29 days extension announced last April.
In 2018, during the first term of the Trump administration, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Chinese imports based on Section 301 of the Trade Act, and China retaliated by imposing additional tariffs on U.S. imports, exempting some items.
This measure extends the exemption period for additional tariffs on these items by three months from the 30th of this month.
The announcement came just days after President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office in January next year, threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese products if the issue of fentanyl imports into the U.S. is not resolved.
