DGIST Employee Startup 'MFR' Wins Grand Innovation Award at 'Smart Construction Challenge'

DGIST (President Geonwoo Lee) employee startup company MFR (CEO Seungyeol Lee, Principal Researcher) announced on the 29th that it won the ‘Best Innovation Award,’ the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Award, at the ‘2024 Smart Construction Challenge’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. MFR submitted a steel bolt tightening automation robot jointly developed with Samsung C&T.


The ‘Smart Construction Challenge’ is a competition aimed at promoting and spreading smart construction technology, where companies (large corporations, SMEs, startups), universities, and research institutes participate to share excellent technologies and ideas and compete in practicality. It is hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and organized by the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology, Korea Land and Housing Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea National Railway, and the Land Safety Management Institute.

Starting with winning the grand prize at the ‘Smart Construction Startup Idea Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in 2021, MFR has continuously achieved results such as being designated as a ‘2023 Smart Construction Small Giant Company’ and selected as a ‘2024 Smart Construction Technology Demonstration Company.’ With this award, MFR has swept the major achievements related to smart construction by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, achieving the ‘Smart Construction Grand Slam.’


Seungyeol Lee, CEO of MFR (Principal Researcher of the Intelligent Robotics Research Division), said, “This award is the result of years of construction and robotics technology convergence carried out in cooperation with Samsung C&T,” adding, “We hope it will be an important turning point in realizing smart construction.”


Meanwhile, MFR was founded by Seungyeol Lee, Principal Researcher of the Intelligent Robotics Research Division at DGIST, and provides customized automation and robotic services tailored to various construction sites based on construction robot modularization technology. Since its founding, it has been recognized for both technological capability and business potential, being selected as a First Penguin startup company by the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund, and achieving various accomplishments such as Deep Tech TIPS from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Samsung Electronics C-Lab Outside, and signing an MOU with Samsung C&T. In particular, the steel bolt tightening automation robot submitted to this competition is scheduled to be applied to Samsung Electronics’ Pyeongtaek semiconductor plant in early 2025.
