A symposium reflecting on the life and historical significance of independence activist Pildong (必東) Im Myeon-su (林冕洙, 1874?1930), a representative independence activist from Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary, will be held.
The Suwon Museum will host an academic symposium titled "The Life and Independence Movement of Pildong Im Myeon-su: Historical Significance and Modern Utilization" at 2 p.m. on December 3rd in the Video Education Room of the Suwon Hwaseong Museum.
The symposium will feature presentations and discussions on the following topics: ▲Im Myeon-su’s independence movement in the Manchurian region during the 1910s and the innkeeping business (Park Hwan, Chairman of the Goryeo Academic and Cultural Foundation) ▲The self-strengthening movement in modern Suwon and Pildong Im Myeon-su (Han Dong-min, Director of Suwon Hwaseong Museum) ▲Development of content continuing Pildong Im Myeon-su’s ‘True Heart and Firm Determination’ (Yoon Yoo-seok, Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Historical and Cultural Contents).
Discussion panelists include Professor Park Seong-soon of Dankook University, Research Fellow Park Cheol-ha of the Suwon Regional Culture Research Institute, and Researcher Hong Hyun-young of the Suwon Studies Research Center.
Im Myeon-su was born in June 1874 in Buksuri, Suwon-myeon, Suwon-gun (present-day Buksu-dong). He was an independence activist who trained independence fighters, led Suwon’s national debt repayment movement, and was a patriotic enlightenment activist who donated his entire fortune for the independence movement. He was also an educator who established Samil School in Suwon to nurture talent.
A Suwon city official stated, "We hope this symposium will be a valuable opportunity to deeply discuss Im Myeon-su’s independence activities and explore how his spirit can be inherited in modern society."
