Goyang-si Selected as an Excellent Case of Local Government Carbon Neutrality... Awarded the Minister of Environment Commendation Goyang City has been selected as an excellent institution for outstanding local government carbon neutrality cases in 2024, hosted by the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation, and received a commendation from the Minister of Environment. This local government carbon neutrality best practices contest was organized to promote sustainable regional development toward achieving carbon neutrality and to publicize distinctive carbon neutrality policies of local governments domestically and internationally, as well as to encourage their implementation.

On the 28th, the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation held a conference at Sono Belle Jeju, selecting and awarding commendations to two metropolitan local governments (Chungnam, Jeonnam), four basic local governments (Goyang Special City, Seoul Dongdaemun-gu, Gwangmyeong-si, Pohang-si), and one Carbon Neutrality Support Center (Chungbuk Center) as this year’s outstanding local governments.

In this contest, outstanding local governments were selected based on the distinctiveness of projects reflecting regional characteristics, interest from heads of organizations, achievement of project outcomes, and applicability and utilization potential by other local governments.

The main policies of Goyang Special City selected this time include creating sustainable economic opportunities through patent applications for a circular economy system covering the entire process of household waste and the establishment of a Waste Treatment Technology Advisory Committee.

The city is striving to develop carbon neutrality technologies in the waste sector and, for the first time nationwide, operates a resident support fund for areas affected by waste treatment facilities, reflecting the number of households and the degree of environmental impact to promote stable operation of waste treatment facilities, making multifaceted efforts to achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal.

In particular, the resource circulation economy policy, which received high evaluation, includes reducing the budget through free treatment of large waste, converting existing waste storage sites into resource circulation facilities to expand household waste treatment, and reducing social costs caused by the construction of new waste treatment facilities.

A Goyang Special City official said, "We hope that Goyang City’s sustainable waste resource recovery policy will establish itself as a model case for carbon neutrality policies in the waste sector both domestically and internationally, and that movements toward carbon neutrality will become more active nationwide."

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “This selection will be an important milestone for Goyang Special City to achieve sustainable development toward carbon neutrality. We will continue to practice carbon neutrality together with local residents and fulfill our role as a leader in domestic and international carbon neutrality policies.”
