Geumcheon-gu Provides Free Pertussis Vaccination for Pregnant Women

Importance of Vaccination for Pregnant Women at 27-36 Weeks to Protect Infants Under 1 Year and Pregnant Women
Pregnant Women Can Receive Free Vaccination at Geumcheon-gu Health Center with Proof of Documentation

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced that it is providing free pertussis vaccination support for pregnant women between 27 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.

Pertussis is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease transmitted through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. With pertussis currently spreading worldwide this year, high-risk groups such as infants under one year old, who are at great risk of developing severe symptoms upon infection, require special attention.

A health center official emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “Receiving the pertussis vaccination during pregnancy allows protective antibodies to be properly transferred to the newborn through the placenta, significantly reducing the incidence and mortality of pertussis in infancy.”

To minimize severe complications caused by pertussis, it is most important for infants under one year old to receive vaccinations at 2, 4, and 6 months of age without fail. Pregnant women in their third trimester, between 27 and 36 weeks, are strongly recommended to receive the diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (Tdap) vaccination.

The district offers free vaccinations at the vaccination room on the 4th floor of the Geumcheon-gu Health Center for pregnant women residing in Geumcheon-gu who are between 27 and 36 weeks pregnant. Eligible pregnant women should bring identification and pregnancy confirmation documents when visiting the health center. However, mothers with underlying health conditions should first check with their hospital whether vaccination is possible.

Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, said, “I hope pregnant residents take this opportunity to protect themselves and their babies from pertussis through vaccination,” and added, “We will continue to spare no effort in supporting the health of Geumcheon-gu residents.”
