Targeting Over 1,200 Elementary Students in 8 Schools in Seo-gu, Incheon

SK Innovation's subsidiary SK Incheon Petrochem announced on the 28th that it has successfully concluded the eco-friendly play science class for elementary school students, which it has been operating together with Good Neighbors Incheon Regional Headquarters to foster creative talents in the local community.

The eco-friendly play science class is a social contribution activity in the education sector that helps students understand the principles of environment and science through making play kits and hands-on experience. This year, the program was held 24 times over six months starting in June, targeting about 1,200 fifth-grade students from eight elementary schools located in Seo-gu, Incheon.

The classes consisted of three sessions: assembling airplanes to help understand aerospace engineering, making mini air purifiers to learn about air pollution and fine dust concepts, and creating solar-powered lamps to grasp the importance of carbon neutrality and renewable energy.

Since its launch in 2019 by SK Incheon Petrochem, the eco-friendly play science class has involved a cumulative total of 8,500 elementary school students. In addition to simple kit assembly, theoretical education by class teachers and equipment experience were combined to enhance practical learning effects.

Hong Wook-pyo, Head of Management Support at SK Incheon Petrochem, said, "We operated the program to provide opportunities to get closer to environment and science through making fun play kits," adding, "We will continue social contribution activities in education to nurture local talents."

Since 2019, SK Incheon Petrochem has signed a business agreement with Good Neighbors Incheon Regional Headquarters to establish an education-specialized social contribution model and is operating various programs. Together with Seo-gu Office of Incheon and Yonsei University, it runs ‘SK Happiness Mentoring’ for local middle school students, and with Incheon Talent Lifelong Education Promotion Institute, it carries out the ‘SK Happiness Scholarship,’ continuing its local talent development projects.
