Icheon Downtown 'Bunsudae Intersection' Reborn as a Civic Plaza

City Completes Traffic Plaza and Landscape Improvement Project
Equipped with Media Facade, Performance Hall, and Landscape Lighting

The Fountain Intersection in Changjeon-dong, the central area of Icheon City, Gyeonggi Province, has been reborn as a citizen space equipped with various media exhibitions, performances, and landscape lighting.

On the 28th, Icheon City announced that it held the completion ceremony and lighting event for the 'Fountain Intersection Traffic Plaza and Landscape Improvement Project' on the 27th.

Located in the heart of downtown Icheon, the Fountain Intersection is a key traffic hub connecting major areas within the city. However, due to heavy traffic and the characteristics of the five-way intersection, frequent traffic accidents have occurred, raising the need for road improvements.

Accordingly, the city prepared improvement measures based on the results of a special traffic safety survey conducted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Icheon Police Station, and Korea Transportation Safety Authority. During this process, citizen opinions were reflected through surveys for revitalizing the old downtown, residents' briefings, and feedback from visits to shopping districts. The city invested a total project cost of 6.5 billion KRW, began construction in July, and held the completion ceremony after about five months.

The newly developed Fountain Intersection consists of three plazas. The first plaza was designed as a space symbolizing the future of Icheon by installing media facades and media facilities. The second plaza is a space where citizens can participate in busking performances and other activities. The third plaza features a fountain facility symbolizing the image of the Fountain Intersection and a resting area. In particular, Yeongchang-ro was equipped with landscape lighting, making it one of Icheon's three major nighttime scenic spots along with Seolbong Park and Waterfront Park.

Meanwhile, the completion ceremony was attended by Kim Kyung-hee, Mayor of Icheon; Song Seok-jun, Member of the National Assembly; Park Myung-seo, Chairman of the Icheon City Council; Kim Hyo-jong, Head of Korea Electric Power Corporation Icheon Branch; and other key officials from city institutions and organizations.

Mayor Kim said, “Through this traffic plaza and landscape improvement project, the Fountain Intersection will be reborn as a downtown landmark of Icheon. We will do our best to transform the city into a sustainable city for future generations and a healthy self-sufficient city.”
