Second Takarazuka Production Following 'Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi'
"Global IP Expansion with Local Characteristics Considered"
The drama 'Crash Landing on You' will be performed by Takarazuka in Japan.
The production company Studio Dragon announced on the 28th that the curtain will rise in Tokyo on the 30th. Takarazuka is a traditional Japanese all-female musical theater troupe. This troupe, celebrating its 110th anniversary this year, is composed entirely of female members. It has a large audience not only in Japan but also worldwide.
This is the second time a Korean drama has been adapted into a Takarazuka production, following 'The Legend' in 2009. Local interest is considerable. The 18 performances held at the Tate-mono Brillia Hall in Tokyo (with a capacity of 1,300 seats) until the 15th of next month were sold out early. The Osaka performances, scheduled from the 22nd to the 28th of next month at the Umeda Arts Theater Main Hall (with a capacity of 1,905 seats), are also experiencing fierce ticket competition.
On stage, Asami Jun (朝美絢) and Yumeshiro Aya (夢白あや), representatives of the Takarazuka Revue, will perform. They will portray Ri Jeong-hyeok and Yoon Se-ri, respectively. A Studio Dragon official said, "We devoted more than three months to choreography and action to reinterpret the original work into the Takarazuka version."
'Crash Landing on You' was previously produced as a musical and gained great popularity. The performances held at the Yomiuri Hall in Tokyo last February were sold out every day. The encore performance held at the New National Theatre Tokyo in July was also a great success.
General producer Kim Tae-hyung said, "'Crash Landing on You' being produced by Takarazuka, which has a 110-year tradition, is a very significant event in Japan," adding, "We plan to present a Season 2 performance and a replica performance composed entirely of local musical actors."
A Studio Dragon official stated, "This is a clear example of the global ripple effect that localization of a hit IP can bring," and added, "We will strengthen the vitality of the IP through an IP expansion strategy that considers local characteristics."
'Crash Landing on You' was released in Japan in 2019 through Netflix and other platforms. It gained sensational popularity by ranking in the Netflix TV top 10 for 72 weeks. In the '2023 K-Content Overseas Expansion Survey' published by the Korea Creative Content Agency last January, it was cited as one of the most frequently watched K-dramas by Japanese viewers, alongside 'Winter Sonata.'
