Brita Environmental Protection Index Released
Brita disclosed its environmental protection index generated through the use of its products on the 28th.
According to a Brita survey, using a Brita water purifier can reduce plastic waste by 15.1 kg annually. A person consuming 2 liters of water daily using bottled water generates 17 kg of plastic waste per year based on 1.5-liter bottles, but when using a Brita filter, it is only 1.9 kg, showing about a tenfold difference. The difference in carbon dioxide emissions is even greater; 117.7 kg is emitted when using bottled water, whereas only 5.2 kg is emitted when using a Brita filter, about 23 times less.
According to Brita headquarters' sustainability report, the number of disposable plastic water bottles saved by using Brita products increased by 25%, from approximately 4 billion in 2020 to about 5 billion in 2022. Brita introduced a sustainability indicator called ‘Planet Contribution’ in 2020 and aims to reduce the use of 6.5 billion water bottles annually by 2025.
Brita is the world’s first water purifier manufacturer to offer a recycling program to consumers since 1992 and has continued related activities for over 30 years. Especially in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa regions, a significant increase was recently observed; in 2022, the number of collected filters in these regions increased by 14% compared to the previous year. Brita Korea also introduced the filter collection program ‘Green Leaf Membership’ in 2021, collecting over 600,000 filters domestically and reducing more than 2,000 tons of disposable plastic.
Brita, which aimed to increase the recycled material ratio of ion exchange resin used in filters to 20% by 2025, has already achieved this goal. The Maxtra Pro cartridge, launched domestically last August, uses bio-based plastic certified by the international sustainability and low-carbon certification system ‘ISCC PLUS’ for 50% of its body, and its individual components such as plastic, activated carbon, and ion exchange resin are easily separable, resulting in a recycling rate of 99%.
Joo Min-hye, Managing Director of Brita Korea, said, "Brita’s goal goes beyond providing safe drinking water to spreading ‘environmentally conscious drinking habits.’ We will continue to promote sustainable drinking solutions by considering the environment at every stage from production to recycling."
