Students with Diabetes... 'Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Camp'
Five Divisions and Programs to Provide Practical Diabetes Management Support
Busan Metropolitan Office of Education's efforts to help students develop the ability to manage diabetes independently without relying on their parents are drawing attention.
On the morning of the 30th at 9 a.m., the Busan Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Ha Yun-su) will hold the '2024 Busan Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes Camp' at Gyeongnam Information University Centum Campus for 35 students with diabetes and their parents.
This camp aims to restore the self-esteem of students living with diabetes and to cultivate their self-directed diabetes management skills.
Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by insufficient insulin secretion or impaired normal function. In particular, 'Type 1 diabetes,' which mainly occurs in children and adolescents, is an autoimmune disease where insulin is not secreted from the pancreas, making insulin injections and blood sugar management critically important.
The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education Student Health Promotion Center and Busan National University Hospital jointly operate the camp through five divisions: medical, nursing, nutrition, exercise, and social welfare.
Focusing on enhancing students' proactive blood sugar management skills and their ability to respond to emergencies such as hypoglycemia, the camp offers various programs including ▲ diabetes management education ▲ self blood glucose meter training ▲ nutrition and exercise management ▲ self-esteem recovery activities ▲ and recreation.
Additionally, 21 school health teachers affiliated with the city education office will participate in the camp to provide guidance on safely caring for students with diabetes in school settings, supporting systematic diabetes management.
Through this camp, the Busan Office of Education expects not only to boost the self-esteem of students living with diabetes but also to foster emotional bonds between students and parents, creating an opportunity for greater mutual understanding.
Ha Yun-su, Superintendent of Busan Metropolitan Office of Education, said, “This camp will provide practical help to students and parents who need active diabetes management,” adding, “I hope this camp becomes a valuable opportunity to overcome many difficulties caused by diabetes.”
