Seoul Metro (President Baek Ho) announced on the 27th that it was selected as a meritorious institution in the institution category and produced three awardees in the individual category at the ‘2024 Seoul Metropolitan Volunteer Merit Award Ceremony’ held at Seoul City Hall.
The ‘Seoul Metropolitan Volunteer Merit Award Ceremony,’ hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Seoul Volunteer Center, is an event that selects and honors volunteers, groups, and institutions who have devoted themselves to the local community.
This year, four institutions including Seoul Metro received institutional awards, and a total of 95 individuals were honored in the individual and group categories, including 84 citizens and 11 public officials and employees of investment and affiliated institutions.
Seoul Metro was recognized for its contributions to the local community through various social contribution activities and received the Seoul Metropolitan Volunteer Merit Award in the institution category. This year, marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of Seoul Subway Line 1, the company took the lead in various social contribution activities such as the ‘Plogging Challenge,’ ‘Sharing Love Bread,’ ‘Children’s Safety Experience Event,’ ‘Helping Hands in Rural Areas and Environmental Cleanup Activities,’ ‘Seoul Social Welfare Walking Competition,’ and ‘Winter Coat Sharing.’
Three Seoul Metro employees were listed among the individual awardees. Jeong Byeong-gwan, head of the maintenance team at Jichuk Vehicle Office, has volunteered over 160 times since 2013 by accompanying disabled people on forest trail experience events, taking photos, and creating memory albums. Jeong Jin-cheol, deputy head of the Intelligent Technology Team at the Information and Communication Department, has been a disaster relief volunteer for over 30 years since 1989, engaging in rescue support and disaster recovery activities during disasters. Yoo Hee-jong, assistant manager of the Integrated Control Team, was recognized for his continuous volunteer work in producing Braille books for the visually impaired and organizing outings for elderly people at local welfare foundations.
Jeong Byeong-gwan, one of the awardees and a deputy head at Seoul Metro, said in his acceptance speech, “Photography, which I learned as a hobby, has become a volunteering activity that brings small happiness. The most memorable moment was during a trekking event held in the birch forest of Inje, Gangwon-do, when an elderly person happily said that they had never been to such a beautiful place in their life and smiled brightly, saying they would use the photo I took as their memorial photo.”

Baek Ho, president of Seoul Metro, said, “This award is the result of a heart willing to share, and I want to share the joy of this award with the employees who have actively participated so far, local volunteers, and everyone who strives to make our society warmer. Seoul Metro will continue to take the lead in delivering more love to the local community without change.”
