KOSPI Closes Lower Amid Net Selling by Foreigners and Individuals Yonhap News

The KOSPI index closed lower, pressured by net selling from foreigners and individual investors.


On the 27th, the KOSPI index closed at 2,503.06, down 17.30 points (0.69%) from the previous day. Trading volume was 403.7 million shares, and the trading value was preliminarily estimated at 8.4 trillion KRW.


By investor type, institutions were net buyers with 290.8 billion KRW, while foreigners and individuals were net sellers with 369.1 billion KRW and 27 billion KRW respectively. Program trading saw net buying of 34 billion KRW in arbitrage trades and net selling of 86.2 billion KRW in non-arbitrage trades.


The KOSPI index started lower following the previous day's announcement by then President-elect Donald Trump of tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, but stabilized during the session supported by individual investors' buying. Although institutions turned to net buying during the session, heavy net selling by foreigners weighed down the index.


Sector performance was mixed. Telecommunications rose 4.17%, insurance 3.83%, steel and metals 1.89%, textiles and apparel 1.82%, pharmaceuticals 1.82%, services 1.71%, finance 1.34%, non-metallic minerals 0.86%, securities 0.76%, and food and beverages 0.6%. Conversely, electronics dropped 3.2%, manufacturing -1.72%, chemicals -1.56%, machinery -1.03%, electric and gas utilities -1.0%, and transportation equipment -0.97%.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, performance was also mixed. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix fell 3.43% and 4.97% respectively, LG Energy Solution -1.35%, Hyundai Motor -1.12%, Kia -3.08%, POSCO Holdings -1.65%, and Hyundai Mobis -1.2% declined. On the other hand, Samsung Biologics rose 2.58%, KB Financial 2.81%, Celltrion 1.25%, NAVER 3.78%, and Shinhan Financial Group 1.47% closed higher.


On this day, three stocks hit the upper price limit on the KOSPI market, with 375 stocks advancing. 518 stocks declined, and none hit the lower price limit. 45 stocks closed unchanged.


The KOSDAQ index also closed slightly lower. It ended at 692.0, down 1.15 points (0.17%) from the previous day. By investor type, institutions and foreigners were net buyers with 46.5 billion KRW and 4.5 billion KRW respectively, while individuals were net sellers with 28.4 billion KRW.


Top market capitalization stocks on KOSDAQ showed mixed results. Alteogen rose 2.86%, Rigacembio 1.91%, Hugel 5.02%, Classys 3.53%, Rainbow Robotics 8.9%, and JYP Ent. 5.3% increased. Meanwhile, EcoPro BM and EcoPro fell 3.57% and 1.26%, HLB -0.93%, Enchem -1.83%, and Samchundang Pharm -0.76% closed lower.


Meanwhile, in the Seoul foreign exchange market, the KRW/USD exchange rate traded at 1,397.3 won, up 1.2 won from the previous day.
