National Honam Biological Resources Center, Final Research Project Report Meeting

Establishing Research Strategies for the Utilization of Terrestrial and Coastal Biological Resources

The National Honam Biological Resources Center under the Ministry of Environment announced that it held the '2024 Research Project Final Report Meeting' over two days until the 27th, with about 100 researchers attending.

Since its opening in May 2021, the National Honam Biological Resources Center has been actively conducting research related to island and coastal biological resources.

In particular, last year, it has been establishing a mid- to long-term research strategy to prepare for digital innovation, green growth, and responses to climate and environmental crises, while expanding the scope of research. At this report meeting, the results of research projects conducted by the center in 2024 were presented.

On the 26th, 17 projects from the Island Biological Resources Research Division were introduced, and on the 27th, 8 projects from the Island Biological Convergence Research Division were presented, highlighting various research achievements of the center. Throughout the year, the National Honam Biological Resources Center surveyed 21 island areas, discovering 150 new and unrecorded species, and secured approximately 34,000 biological specimens.

Additionally, 489 natural products and 1,496 cultured strains were secured to discover useful biological materials. A total of 2,752 works were donated to the Island Biological Materials Bank, of which 1,211 were distributed to external institutions, resulting in 32 published papers and 15 patents, demonstrating the research capabilities.

Yoo Kang-yeol, Director of the Island Biological Research Headquarters, stated, “We will continue to strive to spread the value of island and coastal biological resources and to commercialize them.”
