The Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency (Chief Kim Cheol-moon) announced on the 27th that an analysis of fatal traffic accidents on highways crossing Gyeongbuk this year revealed that the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway had the highest number of incidents.
Among the 23 fatalities on highways in the Gyeongbuk area this year, 11 deaths occurred on just one route, the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway, accounting for nearly half. This fatality rate (16.9%) is more than twice the average fatality rate (7.8%) across the 10 routes crossing Gyeongbuk Province.
Additionally, the leading cause of fatal highway accidents was rear-end collisions with preceding vehicles, accounting for 78% (18 cases), followed by accidents involving collisions with workers at road construction sites while passing through, accounting for 13% (3 cases).
The Gyeongbuk Police will strengthen traffic accident prevention activities focused on the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway until the end of the year. They will intensify crackdowns on drivers who fail to maintain a safe distance and request the Korea Expressway Corporation, the road management authority, to enhance safety measures such as improving safety facilities and increasing patrol activities during drowsy driving hours.
A Gyeongbuk Police official urged, “Since the Jungbu Naeryuk Expressway experiences heavy traffic of large freight vehicles and frequent congestion, please be sure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead and be cautious not to drive recklessly while fighting drowsiness.”
