Design Competition Judging Held on the 20th, Winner Selected... Targeting Completion of Jungnang-gu's First Astronomical Science Center in 2026
Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) announced the official start of the Astronomical Science Museum construction project by selecting the winning design through the 'Astronomical Science Museum Construction Design Competition' held on the 20th.
The Astronomical Science Museum was planned to activate science culture experiences and create an astronomical science education space linked to the elementary, middle, and high school curricula. The district planned to build the Astronomical Science Museum in 2023 and announced the design competition in September.
Many excellent design proposals were submitted for this competition, and the winning design was selected from a joint entry by Tomorrow Architects Office Co., Ltd. (CEO Park Young-taek) and Yaho Architects Office Co., Ltd. (CEO Yoon Il-do).
The design received high scores for its excellent connectivity between outdoor and indoor spaces by composing a front yard and a backyard.
The Astronomical Science Museum is scheduled to be built as a three-story building within the children's playground in Yongma Waterfall Park, covering a total area of 1,210㎡. It will include an exhibition hall, planetarium, lecture room, and observation room, making it a place where visitors can observe celestial bodies and enjoy various experiences.
The district plans to complete the detailed design of the Astronomical Science Museum by next year and aims to complete construction by the first half of 2026. The winning design can be viewed on the Seoul City design competition website.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "The Astronomical Science Museum will provide a place for science experiences to local children and youth, and in connection with Yongma Waterfall Park, it will become a new landmark of Jungnang-gu." He added, "We will steadily promote the construction of the Astronomical Science Museum so that residents can enjoy various science experiences."
