Fostering Technology and Talent in AI Safety Sector
The 'AI Safety Research Institute,' which will respond to risks that may arise from artificial intelligence (AI) technology and serve as a hub for global information exchange and joint research, has opened its doors.
On the 27th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held the opening ceremony of the AI Safety Research Institute at the Global R&D Center in Pangyo, Gyeonggi Province.
The institute is a specialized organization established to systematically respond to various risks arising from AI's technical limitations, misuse, and loss of control. It serves as a hub for research collaboration and information exchange in the AI safety field among industry, academia, and research institutions, and as a member of the 'International AI Safety Research Institute Network,' which includes 10 countries, it plays a responsible role in global solidarity.
It aims to cultivate competitive technologies and human resources in the AI safety field and to promote the development and advancement of AI safety-related policies based on scientific research data.
The opening ceremony was attended by key government figures including Ryu Gwang-jun, Director of the Science and Technology Innovation Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT; Yeom Jae-ho, Vice Chairman of the National AI Committee; Lee Kyung-woo, AI and Digital Secretary at the Presidential Office; as well as over 40 key stakeholders from industry, academia, and research such as Oh Seung-pil, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of KT; Oh Hye-yeon, Director of the KAIST AI Research Institute; and Lee Eun-joo, Director of the Seoul National University AI Reliability Research Center.
Kim Myung-joo, appointed as the inaugural director of the AI Safety Research Institute, emphasized, "We will develop and disseminate policies and technologies to assess and prevent or minimize various risks that may arise from AI utilization, and strengthen domestic and international solidarity." He added, "We will serve as a collaborative institution that supports domestic AI companies in minimizing risk factors that hinder their global competitiveness."
At the 'Republic of Korea AI Safety Consortium' agreement ceremony held on the same day, 24 industry, academia, and research institutions in the AI field signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for mutual cooperation in policy research, evaluation, and research and development related to AI safety.
The AI Safety Research Institute and consortium participating institutions plan to focus on joint efforts such as research, development, and demonstration of AI safety frameworks; policy research including responses to international AI safety norms; and technical cooperation related to AI safety.
The consortium participants expressed their expertise and contributions related to AI safety research and declared their willingness to actively cooperate with the AI Safety Research Institute.
