"No One Stopped or Intervened," Netizens Outraged
Veterinarian Drives 400km to Rescue Dog
A man who kicked a puppy, causing it to roll down a slope at a famous tourist site in China, sparked outrage among netizens.
According to the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 23rd (local time), a man recently abused a puppy by throwing and kicking it at Wutai Mountain in China. The incident was captured on video and shared on social media, causing a stir. The man is known to be the owner of the puppy.
Wutai Mountain is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, renowned as a Buddhist sacred place with about 100 temples scattered across the mountain. Millions of tourists visit annually. The puppy was reportedly loved and cared for by visitors, often following worshippers climbing the stairs. However, no one in the video intervened or stopped the man’s actions, which further enraged netizens.
One netizen, introducing himself as the director of an animal hospital in Tianjin, said, "After seeing the video, I drove 400 km to find the puppy." He added, "I paid the owner 300 yuan (about 57,939 KRW) and brought the puppy to Tianjin." He explained, "Originally, I planned to raise the puppy myself, but a woman living in Shenyang sent me a message on social media expressing her intention to adopt it." The woman said, "When I visited Wutai Mountain with my mother, the puppy used to follow me. It feels like fate," and promised to take good care of the puppy. The man reportedly named the puppy 'Luoyi,' combining the name of the temple and Buddhist terminology.
Netizens who heard the news responded with comments such as, "I'm glad the puppy found a good owner," "I feel relieved that it will live a happy life," and "If you are going to abuse animals, why keep them?"
Meanwhile, in September, an incident occurred in eastern Zhejiang Province where an elderly man killed someone else’s dog by throwing it down. At the time, a woman was walking the dog without a leash, and the elderly man witnessed his granddaughter being chased by the dog. In response, he grabbed the dog, threw it to the ground, and killed it. The woman crouched beside the dead dog, crying out, "You killed my dog." However, a Chinese legal expert predicted that the man would not be punished, stating, "Since the owner did not leash the dog, the elderly man’s act of killing the dog may be considered a 'necessary act' to protect the child."
