Kim Yeo-sa Special Prosecutor Act Passes National Assembly for the Third Time This Year
Yoon Exercises Veto on All... Opposition Plans Reconsideration
President Yoon Suk-yeol exercised his right to request reconsideration (veto) on the 'Special Prosecutor Law for First Lady Kim Keon-hee,' which was passed by the National Assembly led by the Democratic Party of Korea on the 26th.
The Blue House stated, "President Yoon approved the 'Bill on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor for the Investigation of Stock Price Manipulation Cases Involving First Lady Kim Keon-hee,' which was passed at the Cabinet meeting presided over by Prime Minister Han Duck-soo today."
The Special Prosecutor Law for First Lady Kim Keon-hee passed the National Assembly three times this year?in February, October, and November?but was all vetoed by President Yoon and thus failed each time.
With this veto, the total number of times President Yoon has exercised his veto power against opposition party's unilateral bills since his inauguration has reached 25.
Earlier, Prime Minister Han presided over the Cabinet meeting at the Government Complex Seoul in the morning and approved the proposal to exercise the right to request reconsideration on the Special Prosecutor Law for First Lady Kim Keon-hee.
Prime Minister Han pointed out, "It is very regrettable and unfortunate that the opposition party once again unilaterally passed the Special Prosecutor Law, whose unconstitutionality has not been resolved at all."
As President Yoon approved the reconsideration request, the Special Prosecutor Law has been sent back to the National Assembly to undergo the reconsideration process.
The Democratic Party plans to hold a plenary session to reconsider the Special Prosecutor Law for First Lady Kim Keon-hee.
However, the timing is undecided. The Democratic Party initially planned to hold the reconsideration vote at the plenary session on the 28th, but is now considering holding the vote at the plenary session on either the 2nd or 10th of next month.
This is because there is an opinion that it is more appropriate to hold the reconsideration vote at a time when they can maximize the number of dissenting votes from within the People Power Party rather than rushing the reconsideration.
Kang Yoo-jung, the Democratic Party floor spokesperson, told reporters on the day, "It has not been decided whether the reconsideration vote on the Special Prosecutor Law will be held at the plenary session on the 28th," adding, "The timing may be delayed, but the party's stance is still undecided."
