Low Survival Rates for Pancreatic and Biliary Tract Cancers... Early Precision Diagnosis and Surgery Are Keys to Treatment

Centum General Hospital Achieves Consecutive Surgical Successes Through Early Detection

Among cancers, pancreatic and biliary cancers are known for their low survival rates and difficulty in treatment.

In particular, detecting minute cancers is not easy. Therefore, early diagnosis followed by prompt surgery is essential to expect long-term survival. Combining precise diagnosis with perfect surgery can increase the success rate of treatment.

However, as the medical crisis continues for an extended period, the difficulties faced by local cancer patients are also increasing. In this situation, the successful treatment cases at Busan Centum General Hospital are attracting attention.

Recently, Centum General Hospital successfully detected pancreatic and biliary cancers early in two female patients and completely removed the cancer through surgery within a short period. This demonstrates that treatment outcomes comparable to large general hospitals in the Seoul metropolitan area can be achieved locally.

In the case of patient A (69 years old), she visited Centum General Hospital due to persistent back pain and jaundice symptoms, where a 1.5 cm biliary cancer was found through biliary endoscopy. She underwent a pancreaticoduodenectomy ten days later. After cancer removal, the patient was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer and is recovering steadily.

Patient B (51 years old) had believed she only had chronic pancreatitis based on diagnoses from other hospitals, but after a precise examination by Dr. Lee Sang-su, head of the Pancreatic and Biliary Center at Centum General Hospital, early pancreatic cancer less than 1 cm was detected. She then successfully underwent surgery to remove the pancreas and spleen within ten days. Medical staff explained that this patient was diagnosed with late stage 1 cancer and can expect long-term survival.

These cases are evaluated as showing how early cancer detection through precise diagnosis greatly influences successful surgery and long-term survival.

Such achievements at Centum General Hospital were made possible through organic cooperation between internal medicine and surgical specialists. The pancreatic and biliary medical team at Centum General Hospital, led by Professor Lee Sang-su (Gastroenterology), former head of the Biliary and Pancreatic Center at Seoul Asan Medical Center, and Professor Park Kwang-min, former chief of the Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery Department at Seoul Asan Medical Center, has established a system for early diagnosis and prompt surgery.

Based on Dr. Lee Sang-su’s outstanding and precise endoscopic diagnostic skills and Director Park Kwang-min’s rich and excellent surgical experience and skills, a system that does not miss the ‘golden time’ is in operation, contributing to the improvement of local medical quality.

Director Park Kwang-min and Center Director Lee Sang-su of Centum General Hospital stated, “The ‘golden time’ in the treatment of pancreatic and biliary cancers is directly linked to patient survival rates. We will continue to do our best to offer hope to more patients by further strengthening early diagnosis and prompt surgical systems.”
