Trump's 10% Additional Tariff Remark Met with China's Response: "Tariff Club... Nonsense"

US Embassy in China: "No Winner in Trade War"

Donald Trump, the President-elect of the United States, announced that he would impose an additional 10% tariff on all Chinese imports upon taking office, prompting China to state that "there are no winners in a trade war or tariff war."

On the 25th (local time), Liu Fengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in the United States, said in a statement, "Regarding the tariff issues imposed by the United States on China, China believes that Sino-US economic and trade cooperation is essentially mutually beneficial," expressing this view.

On the same day, Trump announced via the social networking service (SNS) Truth Social that starting from his inauguration day on January 20 next year, tariffs would be increased by 10% until China stops the illegal drugs such as fentanyl from entering the United States.

In response, spokesperson Liu said that last year, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping took measures to combat drug trafficking, and "China has informed the US side of progress in law enforcement activities related to drugs." He added, "All of this proves that the idea that China deliberately allowed fentanyl precursors to enter the United States is completely contrary to facts and reality."

Chinese media also criticized Trump’s tariff imposition policy. China Central Television (CCTV) introduced a report by the National Retail Federation (NRF) which predicted that if Trump’s tariff pledge is implemented, the annual purchasing power of American consumers could disappear by up to $7.8 billion.

Chinese economic media Caijing referred to Trump as wielding a 'tariff club' and criticized the tariff imposition policy as 'reckless remarks.' The Chinese financial news website Maijingwang also described Trump’s remarks as 'reckless remarks.'
