Blood Donation Drive by Neighbors for Leukemia-Stricken Family of Military Unit Member, Donating 70 Blood Donation Certificates
The Navy's 5th Mine/Landing Warfare Squadron (hereinafter 5th Squadron) showed warmth on the 26th by organizing a group blood donation and donating blood certificates for a military family battling leukemia.
This activity was planned during a group blood donation held on the 11th in celebration of the Navy Foundation Day. Sergeant Kim Su-jin, the 5th Squadron's preventive medical officer in charge, managed the blood donation event and, just in case, inquired with nearby units about places to donate blood certificates. During this process, through fellow medical personnel, she learned about the illness of the family of Master Sergeant Hong Young-gi, who belongs to the Special Warfare Command's Tongyeong ship. The 5th Squadron empathized with the difficulties of their neighboring unit member and decided to make them the donation recipient.
Afterwards, Sergeant Kim rode along with the Korean Red Cross blood donation bus, which toured the piers of Jinhae Naval Base, promoting blood donation and voluntary collection of blood certificates, and installed donation boxes at the entrances. Thanks to these efforts, including subordinate ships, many participated in the cause, and about 70 blood certificates were collected over approximately two weeks until the 25th.
Among them, Staff Sergeant Moon Seong-guk, who donated 36 certificates, said, "I believe that true comrades share together when a fellow soldier is in difficulty. I will continue to donate blood regularly to maintain a healthy military physique and be a reliable hope wherever help is needed."
Kim Da-sol, the 5th Squadron's personnel officer, stated, "We plan to continue quarterly blood donation campaigns and sustain our love for local neighbors through related organizations."
