The Korea Lighting Awards, established in 2014, is the most prestigious lighting industry awards ceremony in South Korea. It commemorates Korea Lighting Day and recognizes local governments, companies, and lighting professionals who have contributed to the development of lighting culture and technological innovation, widely publicizing their achievements.
The city received the grand prize in recognition of its efforts to improve the landscape at major city entry points such as Seoul, Yangju, Pocheon, and Namyangju by implementing landscape improvement projects and installing landscape lighting, creating beautiful gateways both day and night, thereby enhancing the living environment for citizens.
In particular, the city was highly praised for reducing energy consumption by adjusting lighting brightness according to specific times or floating populations and for introducing a solar power system, presenting a model case of sustainable urban lighting.
Mayor Kim Dong-geun said, “This award is highly meaningful as it recognizes Uijeongbu City’s urban aesthetics and lighting policies nationwide,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to create beautiful nighttime scenery and a sustainable urban environment.”
Meanwhile, Lighting Day was established to commemorate the historic event on March 6, 1887, when the first incandescent bulb in Korea was lit at Geoncheonggung within Gyeongbokgung Palace.
