Gwanak-gu Wins Gold Award for 2024 'Free Home Appliance Pickup Service'

Gold Award Winner This Year, Only Among Seoul's Autonomous Districts... Establishing a Sustainable Resource Circulation Model
Two Consecutive Years of Winning Following Last Year, Achieving a Higher Level of Success in Resource Circulation
▲Largest Collection Center in Seoul's Southwestern Area ▲Recognized Externally for Establishing a Rapid Collection System for Waste Electronics

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) achieved the remarkable feat of winning the Gold Prize (Minister of Environment Award) for two consecutive years at the '2024 Free Home Visit Collection Service for Waste Electrical Appliances Excellent Local Government Competition.'

Hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Lee Sunhwan Governance, this competition evaluated 226 local governments nationwide based on excellent cases and performance in waste electrical appliance home visit collection. Five domestic and international environmental experts assessed the contributions to resource circulation activation and the efficient improvement of systems to select outstanding local governments.

Following last year's Silver Prize, Gwanak-gu was the only district in Seoul to receive the Gold Prize this year, further elevating its achievements in the field of resource circulation.

The district received high evaluations for ▲ establishing and operating the largest collection center in the southwest area of Seoul ▲ building and streamlining a rapid collection system for waste electrical appliances ▲ and thorough performance management.

In particular, the district increased resident convenience by installing small waste electrical appliance collection boxes in every neighborhood and established an efficient system that transports collected waste electrical appliances from each neighborhood to the collection center once a week, thereby increasing the collection rate.

Additionally, the district drew positive evaluations from experts by actively promoting communication and participation among residents through various media such as the district newsletter, electronic billboards, and YouTube, thereby raising awareness of resource circulation.

Through various specialized projects such as ▲ introducing smart collection boxes for waste cooking oil ▲ distributing dedicated recycling bags ▲ and expanding coffee grounds recycling, the district is actively leading resource circulation by achieving outstanding results in reducing household waste and improving recycling rates.

Accordingly, on November 1st, the district was externally recognized for expanding resource circulation infrastructure and successfully implementing resident-led programs by winning the ‘Grand Prize’ at the 2024 Seoul Recycling Performance Evaluation.

Park Jun-hee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “Thanks to the participation of residents, we were able to achieve good results in creating a sustainable city and a clean living environment in Gwanak. We will continue to improve the waste electrical appliance disposal system to maximize resident convenience and actively promote various resource recycling projects.”
