Among 141 Researchers in the 'Environment and Ecology' Field... Only 2 Researchers from Korea's KIOST Selected
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) announced that Senior Researchers Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong from the South Sea Research Institute have been named on the ‘2024 Highly Cited Researchers (HCR)’ list published by Clarivate Analytics, the U.S. organization that manages SCIE.
Senior Researcher Sanghee Hong, Ecological Risk Research Division, KIOST.
SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) refers to a research paper and academic research database.
Clarivate Analytics in the U.S. annually selects and announces researchers who have published the highest number of highly cited papers?those in the top 1% by citation count over the past 10 years?in various fields such as environment, ecology, chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and social sciences. This corresponds to approximately the top 0.1% of researchers worldwide.
Senior Researchers Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong were selected in the ‘Environment and Ecology’ research field. Wonjun Shim was honored for the second consecutive year, while Sanghee Hong was selected for the first time this year. Notably, in the ‘Environment and Ecology’ category, only two scientists affiliated with KIOST in South Korea were selected, demonstrating KIOST’s world-class research capabilities in the marine environment field.
Senior Researcher Wonjun Shim is a world-renowned authority in marine pollution. He graduated from the Department of Oceanography at Seoul National University in 1990 and earned his Ph.D. from the same university in 2000. Since joining KIOST in 2003, he has conducted various studies in the field of marine pollution. To date, he has published over 200 papers related to marine pollution, including microplastic contamination, in international journals, which have been cited more than 14,000 times in total.
Senior Researcher Sanghee Hong is a world-renowned expert in marine microplastic pollution. She graduated from the Department of Biology at Ewha Womans University in 1994 and earned her Ph.D. from the same university in 2002. Since joining KIOST in 2008, she has conducted research to elucidate the effects of persistent pollutants and marine plastics on marine ecosystems. She has published over 130 papers in international journals and currently serves as the principal investigator of the national research and development project on marine microplastics (2015?present).
Having conducted long-term collaborative research within KIOST’s Ecological Risk Research Division, they have made significant contributions to the assessment of microplastic pollution and the elucidation of environmental behavior in the marine environment. Their research findings have played an important role in domestic and international policy-making and in raising public awareness.
Drs. Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong stated, “With the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee, which is the final meeting to draft an international agreement to end plastic waste pollution on Earth including the oceans, scheduled to be held in Busan next week, we hope that a scientifically based draft international agreement will be well prepared and that a meaningful agreement will be enacted in the future to preserve the marine environment without burdening marine ecosystems or future generations.”
Heeseung Lee, President of KIOST, said, “We are very proud that two KIOST researchers have been selected as the world’s most influential researchers (HCR) this year,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to support KIOST researchers in producing world-class research achievements in various fields, including marine microplastic-related research.”
