Daiso Recalls Stainless Steel Cleaner Exceeding Lead Standards
Refunds Available at All Stores Without Receipt
Daiso has initiated a recall after a stainless steel cleaner product it imported and sold exceeded lead standards.
Through an in-store notice, Daiso announced that from the 19th of this month until the 31st of next month, the "1006714 Stainless Steel Cleaner" will be refunded "regardless of manufacturing date, purchase time, usage status, or receipt availability." They added, "We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and concern caused to our customers," and "We will strive to supply safer products."
The recall was decided due to the product exceeding lead limits. Refunds will be processed at all stores regardless of the place of purchase, and the refund amount is the regular selling price of 1,000 won, regardless of usage. Customers can receive a refund or cancellation if they bring the actual product.
The stainless steel cleaner is wax-based and is applied and rubbed to remove discoloration, stains, or burns on pots and kitchen appliances. It gained popularity as a 'Daiso honey item' through word of mouth on online communities and social networking services (SNS), praised for its generous quantity and excellent ability to remove stubborn grime.
Netizens who heard the news reacted with comments such as, "Was this not posted on the website?" "Who would notice if it's posted so small?" "Seems like this happens often at Daiso," "Please verify products properly," "I trusted Daiso and bought it," "I already used half after checking. What should I do? Feeling uneasy," "Is a refund all they will do?" "This would have been a big problem if it were in the US," "I thought this was a very famous product," and "This is why you can't just like something because it's cheap."
Lead is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer under the World Health Organization (WHO). Exposure above safety standards can harm reproductive functions and increase cancer risk. During pregnancy, it can affect brain development and cause learning and behavioral problems in children.
