"Solving Concrete Quality Control with Artificial Intelligence"

An artificial intelligence-based prediction system that can systematically manage concrete quality has been developed.

The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) announced on the 25th that the research team of KICT's South-North Korea Infrastructure Special Committee has developed an 'AI-based Concrete Quality Management Prediction System' that can comprehensively review concrete mix design, strength prediction, and curing management.

This system is designed to enable optimal concrete strength, mix composition, and curing management by applying over 7,300 data points to a machine learning algorithm using input variables such as information on materials used?water, cement, aggregates?and curing age (elapsed time and days since concrete placement).

KICT explained that by using this system, it is possible to predict the design standard strength (10~120 MPa) of not only general concrete in winter but also recycled aggregate concrete, high-strength concrete, and ultra-high-performance concrete.

Above all, this system is expected to play a role in producing high-quality concrete and improving construction efficiency in various projects from the construction planning stage.

KICT plans to expand the construction of a concrete-related database (DB) through cooperation with overseas institutions to utilize this system not only in domestic construction projects but also in overseas construction markets.

Kim Byung-seok, President of KICT, pointed out, "At construction sites, cases occur where low-strength concrete that does not meet standards is used to comply with construction schedules or to reduce costs and prevent economic losses. The problem is that this causes quality management issues such as structural safety and durability degradation."

He added, "The AI-based system developed by KICT is a core technology to solve the recently contentious concrete quality issues. We will strive to share the related technology with domestic related organizations and companies to resolve winter concrete quality problems."
