Ministry of Environment and IUCN Conduct 'Natural Capital Disclosure' Capacity Building Training

The Ministry of Environment announced on the 25th that it will hold a 'Natural Capital Disclosure Capacity Building Workshop' in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

This event was organized to enhance companies' understanding of natural capital disclosure and to provide practical training for preparing sustainable management reports. Natural capital disclosure is a system where companies assess and disclose to investors their impacts on and dependencies on biodiversity. The European Union (EU) has imposed disclosure obligations on some companies, and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) is also considering its introduction. South Korea is preparing to adopt it, led by the Ministry of Environment.

The training will be held for three days starting from the 26th at the SETEC Convention Center in Gangnam, Seoul. Lectures will be delivered by expert instructors affiliated with international organizations such as the IUCN and the Integrated Biodiversity Assessment Tool (IBAT) online platform. About 50 corporate representatives from Korea will attend. Practical training will cover corporate strategies for natural-related financial disclosure, understanding and practice of natural-related impacts and dependencies, and understanding guidelines for disclosure preparation.

Kim Tae-o, Director of the Nature Conservation Bureau at the Ministry of Environment, said, "This training event and the international academic symposium will provide an opportunity to establish a foundation for companies to contribute to the natural environment and society," adding, "We will continue to offer various support and training through cooperation with international professional organizations so that companies can respond to natural capital disclosure."
