Three-Day Parliamentary Confirmation Hearings Held
Appointment Without Adoption of Hearing Report
President Yoon Suk-yeol approved the appointment of Park Jang-beom as the president of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) on the 23rd.
The term will be from the 10th of next month until December 9, 2027.
Earlier, the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee unusually held a confirmation hearing for Park over three days from the 18th to the 20th, but failed to adopt the confirmation hearing report.
Subsequently, President Yoon requested the National Assembly to resend the hearing report on Park on the 21st, and when there was no response from the Assembly, he appointed him without the adoption of the hearing report on this day.
Park Jang-beom, a graduate of Daejeon Daeseong High School and Yonsei University’s Department of Economics, joined KBS in 1994 as part of the 20th public recruitment class of reporters. He served as London correspondent, head of the Social Affairs Division 2, and chief secretary, and since November last year, he has been the anchor of KBS 1TV's 'News 9'.
In a solo interview broadcast by KBS with President Yoon in February this year, Park described the allegations regarding First Lady Kim Geon-hee's luxury handbag as "a so-called pouch, a small bag from a foreign company," which drew criticism from opposition parties accusing him of deliberately downplaying the issue.
