Jeonnam Provincial Council Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Affairs Committee Holds On-site Meeting with Seaweed and Abalone Fishers

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Committee of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council (Chairman Kim Moon-su, Shinan 1) held an on-site meeting with seaweed and abalone fishermen at the Gangjin County Fisheries Cooperative on the 22nd to discuss difficulties and seek solutions.

The committee members who visited the site met with aquaculture fishermen and reached a consensus on ▲extension of the natural disaster damage reporting period ▲possibility of expanding indirect support for households affected by heavy rain damage ▲development of seaweed aquaculture license areas within village fishery license zones, and held discussions for practical policy development.

Kim Joo-woong, Vice Chairman of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock Committee, stated, "Concerns about natural disasters are intensifying due to changes in aquaculture environments such as high water temperatures and red tides, and we deeply empathize with the hardships of aquaculture households." He promised, "We will continuously consult with Jeollanam-do Province and city and county governments to ensure the extension of the natural disaster damage reporting period and other measures are implemented."

Meanwhile, Jeollanam-do Province estimates that the damage to aquaculture seafood caused by the high water temperature phenomenon, which lasted until October this year, amounts to approximately 75.5 billion KRW based on restoration unit costs. In particular, seaweed and abalone are known to have suffered greater damage from the high water temperatures.
