A woman in her 50s who stole approximately 550 million won by using the driver's license of her spouse, who was in critical condition, was sentenced to probation.
According to the legal community on the 23rd, the Seoul Western District Court's Criminal Division 11 (Chief Judge Bae Seong-jung) sentenced A (57), who was charged with computer fraud and forgery of private documents, to three years in prison with a five-year probation.
In February of last year, A allegedly created a false agreement stating that B, with whom she had been in a de facto marriage for over 20 years, would pay her 500 million won in alimony after B fell into an unconscious state due to heart failure and myocardial infarction. She is also accused of using B's driver's license to unlawfully withdraw approximately 550 million won from B's bank account.
The court stated, "Considering the circumstances and methods of the defendant's crime, the nature of the offense is serious, and the amount embezzled, 550 million won, is not insignificant." However, the court also explained the sentencing by saying, "The defendant is a first-time offender with no prior criminal record, and having lived with B for about 20 years, a significant portion of the funds appear to be jointly accumulated assets between the defendant and B, which provides some mitigating circumstances regarding the defendant's motive for the crime."
