As of the end of October 2024, the number of single-person households in Dongdaemun-gu is 87,165. This accounts for 50.19% of the total 173,654 households.

Seoul Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is operating the social network formation program "Dongili's Neighborhood Friends" to encourage social participation of single-person households and prevent isolation.

"Dongili's Neighborhood Friends" is named by combining 'Dong' from Dongdaemun-gu and 'Il' from single-person households.

Residents form self-help groups of three or more people based on hobbies, age, and interests, meeting at least once a month. The district supports activity expenses up to 50,000 KRW per member per month.

On the 21st, the district held an annual activity performance sharing meeting for "Dongili's Neighborhood Friends" at the Dongdaemun-gu Family Center.

The event, held from 7 p.m., was attended by about 40 single-person household members who shared the activities of 11 self-help groups throughout the year.

Following this, participants shared their impressions and engaged in side events such as writing bucket lists and decorating a wish tree. There was also a session to talk with Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, on the theme of "Making Dongdaemun-gu a Happy Place for Single-Person Households."

A participant’s comment, "Through this meeting, I was very happy to have appointments with someone and to wait for someone," resonated with many single-person households.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, "Through this activity sharing meeting, we deeply felt the need for forming personal networks and a sense of belonging among single-person households. We will continue to provide support necessary for building social networks so that single-person households do not become isolated."
