During August, the Baegun Scholarship Foundation received 796 scholarship applications. The foundation selected scholarship recipients by applying a scoring table based on criteria such as parents' or guardians' asset levels, school grades, number of children, and award history. The final selected scholarship students numbered 543, from 7 target schools.
The Baegun Scholarship Foundation board decided to provide 685 million KRW in scholarships this year. Last year, 503 students received 650 million KRW, but this year, with 40 more recipients, the payment amount increased by 35 million KRW.
Notably, starting this year, scholarships have been newly established to honor descendants of independence activists and to guarantee fair opportunities for out-of-school youth who may be excluded from educational benefits. Additionally, the foundation is participating in the ‘Save Gwangyang Health University Movement’ to normalize Gwangyang Health University, increasing scholarships by 30 million KRW to support a total of 100 million KRW.
The 2024 Baegun Scholarships are scheduled to be paid into students' accounts on December 23, when this year's fixed deposits mature. The scholarship certificate awarding ceremony will be held earlier on December 19 in the city hall main conference room.
Meanwhile, the Baegun Scholarship Foundation, established in 1991 with the goal of contributing to the local community and fostering talent, has raised a fund of 27.4 billion KRW through voluntary donations from citizens and companies, and has provided scholarships totaling 13.3 billion KRW to 16,287 students to date.
