The Korea Science Journalists Association (President Yongha Yoo) announced on the 21st that it has published a 40-year history book titled "40 Years of Science Journalism, 60 Selected Science Issues," which records the history of science journalism alongside the development of science in the Republic of Korea.
The first part of the 40-year history book reviews the 40-year journey of the association from its founding in 1984 to its 40th anniversary in 2024, analyzing the trends and current status of science journalism. In particular, to understand the current state of science journalism, the book includes the results of a survey conducted from July 3 to July 25 targeting a total of 119 reporters responsible for science-related fields. Through this, it explores the status and reporting environment of science journalism, perceptions of the science and technology sector, ways to strengthen capabilities, and also seeks measures to revitalize science journalism in response to changes in the media environment.
The second part contains the history of science reporting alongside the development of science and technology in Korea since the establishment of the first science department at the Hankook Ilbo in March 1958. It summarizes a total of 60 major issues in the Korean science community from 1984 to 2024, focusing on articles to provide an overview of the flow of scientific and technological development.
The 38 selected science issues from 1984 to 2014 were reorganized and edited from the 30-year history book published in 2014. The 22 selected science issues from the recent 10 years, 2015 to 2024, were finalized after analyzing articles from BigKinds by the Korea Press Foundation, the top 10 news by the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies, and major scientific keywords from Science and Nature over the past decade, followed by discussions of the editorial committee.
President Yongha Yoo emphasized in the foreword, "This 40-year history book is a kind of report that remembers and appreciates the efforts of our predecessors who founded the association with a shared goal of advancing science journalism despite difficult circumstances where it was not highly recognized within their companies, and it aims to create a better future." He added, "It is even more meaningful because many member reporters actively participated in writing, making it a historical record that embodies the unity and collective intelligence of our science journalists."
The 40-year history book will be unveiled at the "2024 Night of Science Journalism" held at Lotte Hotel on November 29 and will be distributed to media organizations, government ministries, libraries, medical science communities, and major institutions.
"40 Years of Science Journalism, 60 Selected Science Issues, Korea Science Journalists Association 40-Year History" was produced with the support of the Korea Press Foundation and the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity. It is also available for download on the Korea Science Journalists Association website.
