Temporary Allowance for Disposal in Standard Pay-As-You-Throw Bags
Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 21st that it will operate a ‘Special Collection Period for Kimchi-making Waste’ until the end of December to facilitate the smooth disposal and processing of kimchi-making waste during the winter kimchi-making season.
During this special collection period, considering the temporary large volume of food waste generated during the kimchi-making season, citizens will be temporarily allowed to dispose of kimchi-making waste in general volume-based waste bags for their convenience.
Kimchi-making waste such as vegetables like napa cabbage and radish should be disposed of using food waste volume-based bags, but since the maximum size of food waste bags is 20ℓ and the volume of kimchi-making waste is large, this measure allows disposal in general volume-based waste bags.
Therefore, during the special collection period, vegetables salted with salt or coated with seasoning must be disposed of in yellow food waste volume-based bags or through RFID-based individual food waste weighing devices, while vegetables with soil, outer leaves of napa cabbage, stems, roots, onion skins, etc., must be separated and disposed of in white general volume-based waste bags without mixing with general waste.
Disposing of waste in bags other than volume-based bags is considered illegal dumping and will not be collected, and a fine of up to 1 million KRW may be imposed.
Shim Jae-woo, Director of the Resource Circulation Division, said, “We are operating a special collection period using volume-based bags for the convenient disposal of kimchi-making waste by citizens,” and added, “We ask for citizens’ cooperation to ensure proper separation and disposal for smooth collection.”
