Hyundai Construction announced on the 21st that it won the 'Best Innovation Award' in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) category of the '2024 Smart Construction Challenge.' Now in its fifth year, the Smart Construction Challenge is a competition hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to promote and disseminate excellent smart construction technologies. It is organized by related institutions in five technical fields: safety management, complex & housing, roads, railways, and BIM. With this award, Hyundai Construction has achieved a record of winning the Smart Construction Challenge for four consecutive years.
Hyundai Construction formed a consortium with Woosong University, Taeseong SNI, Glotech, and Yucore System to present the 'Integrated Management Technology and Process for Optimizing the Domestic Construction Project Management Environment Using Korean-style BIM Software.' This technology was applied at the 'Wolgok~Pangyo Section 6' site, demonstrating BIM-based design safety reviews, monthly safety training using 4D simulation, safety management utilizing Augmented Reality (AR), design issue management based on a Common Data Environment (CDE), and BIM-based construction plan reviews. It received high praise for proving its practical usability in actual site management.
A Hyundai Construction official stated, “We have established a BIM work system centered on a dedicated BIM organization by developing customized strategies and standardizing internal guidelines, and have actively promoted technology advancement and field application. We will continue to lead the digital transformation of the construction industry.”
Hyundai Engineering, a subsidiary of Hyundai Construction, also won innovation awards in three categories (safety management, complex & housing, BIM) at the '2024 Smart Construction Challenge.' In the safety management category, they submitted an AI smart earth-retaining wall measurement management system developed in collaboration with partner company Smart Iris. This system uses AI technology to predict unmeasured and unconstructed sections, proactively responding to invisible risk factors. It was created in response to the growing need for measurement management to identify risk factors during construction due to the increasing scale and complexity of underground development projects. It is a smart construction technology that can also contribute to preventing recent ground subsidence accidents.
In the complex & housing category, they submitted the 'Exterior Wall Painting Robot,' developed with partner company J2 ENC. This is smart construction equipment that can replace the labor-intensive task of painting building exteriors. In the BIM category, they showcased the 'Digital Solution for Steel Frame and Process Management in the Construction Phase,' developed with Trimble Korea. This solution allows real-time sharing of tasks among partners, sites, headquarters, and clients, enabling faster communication and decision-making, thereby reducing construction time and costs.
