Review of Optimal Extension Routes and Candidate Sites for Vehicle Depot Relocation
Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 20th that it held an interim report meeting on the preliminary feasibility study for the ‘Extension of Seoul Subway Line 2 Sinjeong Branch to Gimpo and Relocation of Sinjeong Depot’ at Gimpo City Hall on the afternoon of the 19th, discussing the optimal plan to be reflected in the 5th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan.

The ‘Extension of Seoul Subway Line 2 Sinjeong Branch to Gimpo and Relocation of Sinjeong Depot’ project involves extending the terminus of the Sinjeong Branch of Subway Line 2 about 2.4 km from Kkachisan Station to establish a new Sinwol Sageori Station and further extending it to Gimpo City. The goal is to relocate the aging Sinjeong Depot to Gimpo and develop the surrounding area.
The main tasks include reviewing optimal extension route alternatives, examining candidate sites for the relocation of Sinjeong Depot, analyzing project feasibility, and proposing implementation strategies. Through this study, the district aims to find the optimal route alternative with secured economic feasibility and plans to submit the study results to related agencies such as the Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Committee (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) through Seoul City by December this year to be reflected in legal plans such as the 5th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan.
In March, the district signed a ‘Business Agreement for the Extension of Seoul Subway Line 2 Sinjeong Branch to Gimpo’ with Gimpo City to jointly respond to the expansion of transportation infrastructure. This preliminary feasibility study was conducted due to the urgent need to expand the railway transportation network amid large-scale new town construction and reconstruction projects in both local governments. Yangcheon-gu aims to resolve issues related to the establishment of Sinwol Sageori Station and the relocation of Sinjeong Depot, while Gimpo City seeks to alleviate congestion on the Gimpo Gold Line.
The report meeting was attended by Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, Kim Byung-su, Mayor of Gimpo City, as well as officials from Seoul City, Seoul Metro, and the consulting firm. Starting with the consulting firm’s explanation of the route alternatives reviewed at the kickoff meeting and the optimal alternative, questions and discussions were held regarding the future project direction and supplementary matters to promote the project.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “I hope this study will derive the optimal alternative for establishing Sinwol Sageori Station and relocating Sinjeong Depot,” adding, “We will ensure thorough promotion by actively communicating with Seoul City and related ministries so that the study results can be reflected in future legal plans such as the 5th Metropolitan Area Wide-area Transportation Implementation Plan.”
