Sonid AI Develops Autonomous Explosive and Landmine Detection Robot... Targeting Overseas Counterterrorism Security Market

Sonyed subsidiary Sonyed AI announced on the 20th that it is developing an autonomous patrol robot capable of detecting explosives and landmines in dangerous areas using autonomous driving technology to enter the overseas counterterrorism security market.

Sonyed AI is reviewing the possibility of technical cooperation with PIAP, a robot specialized institution under the Polish national research institute. PIAP has previously signed a partnership with Defense Korea, a Sonyed subsidiary, and the two sides can discuss various forms of cooperation as needed in the future.

The core of this detection robot development is to utilize Apollon (model name KED-7), a next-generation explosive and landmine detector using nano-optical sensor technology owned by Sonyed AI. Sonyed AI explained that the KED-7, developed by applying nano-optical sensor technology, has a very high detection rate for both metal and non-metal landmines.

The existing ground-penetrating radar (GPR) landmine detection method has the disadvantage of performance degradation due to soil conditions, and the IMS detectors and detection dogs currently operated at airports and ports have the limitation that they must come into direct contact with explosives to detect them.

The KED-7 displays a risk level on the screen when explosives or landmines are detected nearby, providing operational convenience, and the device resets within 10 seconds, allowing it to detect various types of explosives and landmines.

Park Sang-eun, CEO of Sonyed AI, said, “The need for landmine removal is increasing in relation to the reconstruction projects in Ukraine,” and added, “Since the explosive and landmine detectors and detection robots developed by our company are expected to perform much better than existing products, our entry into the global counterterrorism security market will become more visible in the future.”

Meanwhile, Sonyed AI signed a supply contract for the KED-7 with the security company Karicorp. located in Mumbai, India, in July last year, and has been conducting export consultations with buyers from Europe and the Middle East, including Poland, the Philippines, Thailand, Iraq, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
