This forum is a side event hosted by the city in connection with the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee meeting (INC-5) of the United Nations Plastic Treaty, aimed at exploring the development direction of the upcoming "Plastic Resource Circulation Cluster" to be established in the city and concretizing the circular economy industry model.

The forum will feature ▲a keynote speech by the Ambassador of the European Union to Korea and ▲expert presentations on plastic recycling research under the theme "Circular Economy Era: Development of the Plastic Resource Circulation Cluster and the Future of Busan."

First, Maria Castillo Fernandez, Ambassador of the European Union to Korea, will deliver a keynote speech on the transition to a circular economy and the European Union (EU) policy framework.

Expert presentations include ▲Dr. Choi Yoon-chan of Busan Institute’s "Transition to a Plastic Circular Economy Society for Carbon Neutrality," ▲Professor Oh Dong-yeop of Inha University’s Department of Polymer Engineering’s "Plastic and Carbon Circulation Technologies and Success Cases for an Eco-friendly Marine City Busan," and ▲Senior Researcher Han Yosep of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources’ "Success Strategies and Technological Directions for the Plastic Resource Circulation Cluster."

Professor Oh Dong-yeop and Senior Researcher Han Yosep are experts in plastic recycling research who appeared on the popular science YouTube channel "Andoel Science," and they plan to engage the younger generation to raise awareness of plastic pollution issues.

Any interested citizens can participate by pre-registering on the 'INC-5' side event website.

As the host city for the final meeting (INC-5) to draft the international plastic treaty, the city expects this forum to play a significant role in raising awareness of the importance of the plastic circular economy era and sharing plastic recycling technologies and success stories, contributing greatly to the future establishment of the "Plastic Resource Circulation Cluster."

Lee Byung-seok, Director of the Environmental Policy Office of Busan City, said, "This forum is meaningful as a place to jointly consider the resource recovery of waste plastics to lead the solution to plastic pollution, just like INC-5," adding, "Our city will continue to actively communicate with experts to develop and discover policies necessary for the circular economy industry."
