Dongdaemun-gu Launches Campaign to Commemorate Child Abuse Prevention Day

Joint Campaign Held on the 18th at Kyung Hee University with Dongdaemun Police Station and Dongbu Child Protection Agency
Various Promotional Activities Conducted to Raise Awareness of Child Abuse

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that on the 18th, in celebration of World Child Abuse Prevention Day, Dongdaemun-gu Office, Dongdaemun Police Station, and Seoul Eastern Child Protection Agency jointly conducted a child abuse prevention campaign in the front yard of Kyung Hee University Cheongwoon Hall.

November 19th every year is a legal memorial day established by the international humanitarian organization WWSF (Women’s World Summit Foundation) to raise awareness about the prevention and eradication of child abuse. In Korea, this day has been commemorated since 2007.

During this campaign, various programs aimed at improving public awareness of child abuse were conducted for citizens. Activities such as OX quizzes, finding cases of child abuse in daily life, and promoting ‘Positive Parenting 129’ were organized to encourage citizen participation.

In particular, the campaign served as a meaningful opportunity to raise awareness by emphasizing that, following the deletion of Article 915 (Disciplinary Rights) of the Civil Act in January 2021, corporal punishment of children under the pretext of discipline is no longer permitted.

A citizen who participated in the event said, “I learned for the first time that having a marital quarrel in front of children at home can also be considered child abuse,” and added, “My perception of child abuse has changed through this campaign.”

Dongdaemun-gu plans to continue conducting child abuse prevention campaigns and cooperate with related organizations to ensure early detection and support for children who have suffered abuse.
