Goyang City Opens Han River Bicycle and Pedestrian Shared Path

Connecting Riverbanks Divided by Fences
Improving Han River Accessibility for Cyclists and Pedestrians

Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 19th that it has completed the creation of a combined bicycle and pedestrian path without interruption to the Han River by utilizing the slopes of Jayuro and the embankments of Dochoncheon and other rivers.

The city completed consultations with the Han River Basin Environmental Office to connect the previously fenced-off Daehwacheon and Hanryucheon rivers' endpoints toward the Han River with the riverside bicycle path, opening a new combined bicycle and pedestrian path linking Seoul, Goyang, and Paju along the Han River.

Additionally, paths that were disconnected due to the Jayuro Junction, Dochoncheon, and Haengsincheon were connected with a 3-meter-wide deck path utilizing the slopes of Jayuro and river embankments.

This area, located beneath the Jayuro Junction of the Metropolitan Area 1st Ring Expressway, had been closed for highway management. However, through active consultations between Goyang City and the Korea Expressway Corporation, an 800-meter embankment path was connected, and benches and tree plantings were installed in the unused space beneath the highway to provide rest areas for users.

Residents of nearby areas such as Todang-dong and Haengjuo-dong had previously taken long detours due to Dochoncheon and Haengsincheon, but with the creation of this walking path, they can now cross directly without detours, expressing satisfaction as their inconvenience has been resolved.

Mayor Lee Dong-hwan of Goyang Special City stated, “With the completion of the riverside path and Han River connection project from Sinpyeong to Daehwa along the Han River tributaries (Daehwacheon, Hanryucheon, Dochoncheon, Haengsincheon, and Daejangcheon), citizens can now enjoy the river scenery and freely access from Deogyang and Ilsan downtown areas to the Han River through the combined bicycle and pedestrian path. We will continue to ensure the continuity of walking paths so that citizens can enjoy leisure activities close to the Han River.”

Meanwhile, in 2023, the city created an 800-meter riverside walking path from the underground Beopgot underpass near Daehwacheon downstream in Ilsan Kintex to the lower part of Jayuro where it meets the Han River, and transformed a 500-meter embankment road, which had restricted access, into a riverside path along the lower part of Hanryucheon passing from Ilsan Lake Park to Kintex Waterfront Park.
