Suggestions Made at the 3rd Chungnam Mayors and County Governors Council
Jo Ilgyo, Acting Mayor of Asan, has called for improvements to the crop disaster insurance system.
On the 19th, at the 3rd Chungcheongnam-do Mayors and County Governors Council of the 8th popularly elected administration held in Nonsan, Acting Mayor Jo requested the central government to improve the agricultural disaster insurance system, stating, "It is necessary to revise the system so that heat crack damage can also be covered by crop disaster insurance."
According to the city, this year, prolonged heat waves and heavy rainfall have resulted in 30% of Asan pear farms suffering from heat crack damage (fruit splitting) and 15% experiencing sunburn damage (sun scorch).
While crop disaster insurance covers sunburn damage, it is difficult to receive compensation for heat crack damage, as it is classified as a physiological disorder rather than a natural disaster.
Acting Mayor Jo emphasized, "The crop disaster insurance system was established to compensate for damages caused by natural disasters, not by the fault of farmers. Therefore, heat crack damage should also be included in the coverage."
