Ministry of the Interior and Safety Hosts Government Innovation Championship: 'Seongdong Hanyang Sangsaeng Dormitory' Selected as an Excellent Case in the 'Future-Ready Government' Category... Nationwide First Living-Oriented Housing Support Policy Providing Half Rent for Studio Apartments, Highly Rated as a Collaborative Housing Welfare Model

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Wono) received the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in the 2024 Government Innovation Championship in the category of ‘Government Preparing for the Future.’

The ‘Government Innovation Championship (formerly Government Innovation Best Practice Competition)’ is organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to discover excellent innovation cases from central government, local governments, and public institutions and to share their achievements.

This year, the competition was divided into three categories: ‘Government Preparing for the Future,’ ‘Government Solving Problems,’ and ‘Government Working Digitally.’ A total of 647 cases were submitted, and after preliminary rounds, 44 cases were evaluated by experts and through online public voting, resulting in the selection of 41 outstanding cases.

Seongdong-gu’s ‘Seongdong Hanyang Win-Win Dormitory’ was selected as an excellent innovation case in the ‘Government Preparing for the Future’ category. Launched as a pilot project nationwide in March 2019, the ‘Seongdong Hanyang Win-Win Dormitory’ is a program supported through cooperation among LH, Seongdong-gu, Hanyang University, and landlords, offering rent at about half the usual price for one-room apartments. It has supported a total of 211 households and received high praise for addressing local issues and presenting a housing welfare model based on coexistence and cooperative governance.

Seongdong-gu has implemented a community-based housing support policy that assists young single-person households from moving in to settling down through public-private-academic cooperation.

To alleviate housing cost burdens for young people, the district operates the ‘Half-Price One-Room’ Seongdong Hanyang Win-Win Dormitory, provides moving vehicle support and ‘half-price brokerage fee’ assistance for young single-person households, and runs a project supporting the purchase of daily necessities for young people’s first single-person household, thereby promoting housing stability and reflecting the actual policy needs of youth.

Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, “This award is the result of recognition for Seongdong-gu’s continuous efforts to solve the housing problems faced by young people. Going forward, Seongdong-gu will strengthen youth-centered policies so that young people can settle and grow healthily within the local community.”
